The setting of this beach is striking enough to take your breath away, with its steep red cliffs, swaying palm trees and the deep blue Arabian Sea that extends to infinity. Try to get there early morning even before sunrise and see the various shades of ocean and sky. You can see a lot of activity on beach with fishermen using traditional methods to bring in the catch. Unlike Kovalam, the beaches in Varkala are not crowded and gives you peace of mind.

If you want a mix of great heights and open sea, then paragliding is for you. Flying in the serene skies you are bound to feel like a bird. The cliffs at the Varkala are perfect place for paragliding. You can take off from the helipad located at the top of the cliff. However, once you are air borne, you are solely at the mercy of the winds. Most of the pilots at Varkala are experienced so you don’t need to worry.

Take a stroll along the paved footpath that runs along the entire length of the cliff, bordered by coconut palms, quaint shops, beach shacks, etc. With all the shops light up after the sunset, you will feel like you are magically transported to a beautiful exotic place which you only see in the movies. One will not find many discos and pubs here while looking for nightlife in Varkala but if you are looking for some quit time, this is the right place.

Janardhana Swamy Temple and Varkala Sivagiri Mutt are the two religious places and a visit to these places will enlighten you about the religious beliefs followed here. The Janardhana Swamy temple is a 2000-year old Vishnu temple and a major pilgrim spot. Its splendid architecture is also worth admiring. While Sivagiri Mutt is a 200 acres of sanctified land, which also the final resting place of Sree Narayana Guru. The Mutt is built in 1904 and is situated at the top of the Sivagiri hill.

While Varkala is known for its lovely beaches, the place also has some historical and cultural locations that one can visit. The Anjengo Fort near Varkala date back to the 17th century and they still stand tall.  Initially the fort was used by the Portuguese as a depot for trading goods and later by the British as ammunition store. Varkala is a sea-food lover’s paradise. Most Varkala restaurants cater to a mishmash of Indian, Asian and Western cuisines to suit every taste. And, the best way to choose a restaurant in Varkala is to take a walk along the cliff and check out which restaurant suits your budget and taste. You can also buy your catch from the local fishermen and ask the cook to cook it for you.

If not for the food, it is worth dining here simply for the awesome views, cool breeze and fantastic atmosphere.

Varkala is well known for its dramatic sunsets. Just go to one of the beach shed at the cliff with a drink, and you will have a continuous view of the sun as it slowly sinks down the horizon. The view of the sunset from the cliff is a thing you will remember for long. The variety of colours such as red, orange and yellow makes the sunset a beautiful sight. Many photographers from all over the world come to Varkala to capture the sunset.
