The A/c bus stops will have facilities like FM radio, Wi-Fi, mobile charging stations, drinking water facility, electronic information boards and even ATMs
No more standing in sweltering heat or pouring rain while waiting for a bus. If all goes well, Capital city will soon have air-conditioned bus stops.
With an aim to improve the facilities for passengers, ‘Kerala Innovation Council’, an advisory body of the state government has mooted the concept of modern A/C bus stops in Trivandrum.
According to the proposal, the A/c bus stops will have facilities like FM radio, Wi-Fi and even ATMs. Apart from this it will also have basic amenities like drinking water facility, electronic information boards which tells the time and schedule of the buses, LED lighting, mobile charging stations etc.
Each A/c Bus stop will have a seating capacity of 10. However, based on the availability of the land, the seating capacity can be increased. The bus stops will be designed with public convenience in mind, especially for the handicapped and the elderly. CCTV camera would also be installed so as to increase the security of the commuters. Since there is an ATM, a security guard will also be stationed at the bus stop.
Currently, the design of the smart bus shelter is underway and if all goes according to plan, the team can install the first A/c bus shelter within 3 months. Each bus shelter will cost Rs.5 lakh to build. The land required for setting up the bus shelter will have to be given by the Kerala Road Fund Board.
Most likely the first A/c Bus stop will be constructed at Museum Bus stop on a pilot basis. Later the project will be expanded to other spots. The proposed spots for a/c bus shelter includes Enchakkal, Medical College, Kazhakootam, Veli, Vatiyoorkavu, Vattapra, Pallipuram, Malayankeezhu, Balaramapuram etc.
Air-conditioned bus stops are not a novelty in India. Already cities like Chennai, Gurgaon, Mumbai and Kolkata have air-conditioned bus stops. And you thought it was only available in Dubai?
