At present the only facility which does advanced diagnostic facilities is the State Public Health Laboratory in Trivandrum.
Kerala state Health Department is seriously considering Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology’s (RGCB) proposal for setting up advanced clinical research labs in all districts.
The advanced clinical research labs will be setup adjacent to district, taluk, or medical college hospitals. Initially the facility will be implemented at three regional sites in Kerala. RGCB seeks an area of at least 5,000 sq ft of for setting up the lab.
Advanced clinical research labs will help to enhance molecular diagnostic facilities in the State. The research labs will provide advanced diagnostic facilities in immunology, clinical pathology, microbiology, biochemistry and advanced molecular diagnostics for the public at a nominal cost.
RGCB will provide lab equipments and other facilities such as uninterrupted supply of lab reagents, automated analysers and trained lab technicians. The research facilities will run round-the-clock. The rates for the clinical test in these facilities will be less than the private clinics. The facility will be totally free for patients in the BPL category.
The state has been depending on labs outside Kerala for all advanced diagnostic tests such as PCR (used in forensic sciences and paternity testing). RGCB has been offering PCR tests for Rs.900, while it costs anywhere upwards of Rs.3,000 in any private lab. At present the only facility which does advanced diagnostic facilities is the State Public Health Laboratory in Trivandrum.
