Neglected Akkulam Tourist Village will soon get a new lease of life as the phase 2 of the renovation work will commence from this week. Minister Kadakampally Surendran will inaugurate the Phase 2 works on June 12 at 4 pm.

The aim is to make Akkulam as an idyllic picnic spot for the city residents and to restore it to its former glory to attract tourist again.

New and exciting things are coming to Akkulam

Digital music fountain, amphitheatre, art installation, cricket bowling pitch, cycle track, and winch transportation to the hilltop are among a slew of recreational facilities that will come up at Akkulam.

The artificial waterfall and pavilion of the swimming pool will be renovated. The pond below the hill top will be renovated with bowl boats, and recreational space atop the hilltop will be turned into a beautiful spot.

Landscaping and beautification

Apart from these, the whole sprawling 6.5-acre property will be landscaped and a compound wall will be constructed. There will also be a facility for adventure sporting facility, new play equipment for the children’s park, restaurant and a help desk. A water treatment plant, waste management, and electrification are the other components to be created in the tourist village.

Phase-1 was a total failure

The phase-1 of the project which was entrusted to the Nirmithi Kendra was a total failure and the tourist village has been closed down since 2012. Boating in Akkulam lake had come to a grinding halt, as the lake was infested with water hyacinth. The removal of water weed and dredging has not been successful. An amount of Rs.1.33 crore were spent on Phase one works alone.
