Paribhashika is a pattern directed, rule-based English to Malayalam Machine Aided Translation (MAT) system. CDAC Trivandrum will soon launch a Malayalam book translated from English using its home-developed translator.
According to Badran V K, associate director, Language Technology of C-DAC, this is the first time that such a software for translation from English to Malayalam is being developed. Paribhashika can carry out comprehensible translation and can show all possible translation. To translate a text or a file, ‘Text input’ and ‘file input’ facilities are provided, post editing option is also available. File formats like txt, pdf, doc and rtf can be used for the file input.
Usually it takes three months to translate a chapter from English to Malayalam. But Paribhashika can complete the translation work within a month. The post manual editing can also be carried out easily making the entire translation hassle-free. The Paribhashika is the first attempt to use the AnglaBharati MAT engine for a Dravidian language and is the first of its kind for Malayalam. The major process of translation is done by the software and the rest is left for human editing.
The software would also help in the translation of reports of various government departments to Malayalam. CDAC also plans to host the web version of Paribhashika online so that people can use it and give feedback.
