Street light facilities, public address system would also be installed at the market.
If all goes well, the age-old Chalai Market will undergo a significant improvement in facilities. A high-level meeting chaired by urban affairs development minister Manjalamkuzhy Ali, decided to take immediate steps to improve basic facilities in Chalai market.
If the shop owners accept the concept of ‘land pooling’ Trivandrum development authority (Trida) will build modern shopping complexes in the market.
“Unless the market gets a facelift, the traders would completely lose their consumers to shopping malls that offer better shopping experience and other facilities. Traders may even get more space for their business in the proposed shopping complexes,” said Manjalamkuzhy Ali to TOI.
Currently parking and other the common amenities in the market are below the minimum standards. The parking problem at Chala would be solved by constructing a parking lot at Erumakuzhi or Putharikandam.
Encroachment on the roads bye the shop owners are creating hindrances on the roads. Trivandrum District Collector asked traders political parties and other unions to remove make-shift arrangements and other structures on either side of the market road.
The meeting also discussed to equip shop owners to immediately respond to a fire outbreak. The shop owners are asked to install fire extinguishers and a fire audit would be conducted at Chala. Steps would be taken to install CCTV surveillance cameras at the market and it would be linked to the police control room which could help in ensuring greater security. Street light facilities, public address system would also be installed at the market.
