The program to clean plastic debris from the beaches has been launched at Kovalam Beach. Soon other beaches will be cleaned.
Since Tropical Storm Ockhi, shores of Trivandrum is witnessing high amounts of plastic debris. The beautiful coastal lines of the capital are now under attack by the plastic debris from the disaster. To clean up this issue, members of the fishermen community and civil society organization Friends of the Marine Life (FML) has launched a clean-up drive to clean the beaches.
The program to clean plastic debris from the beaches has been launched at Kovalam Beach. Soon other beaches will be cleaned. The team from Friends of Marine Life had taken part in a UN meeting that focussed on saving traditional fishermen and had pledged to chalk out a plan of action to protect the ocean.
FML has deployed three teams to collect debris which includes bottles, polythene covers, food baskets, food covers, sanitary napkins, slippers and other non-degradable waste. The FML members segregated the waste and have handed it over to the concerned agencies for recycling.
FML will be working with government and science organizations such as Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute to keep our beaches clean from waste.
