Germany became World Cup Football champion for the fourth time by defeating Argentina 1-0 on the shoulders of a goal by Mario Götze.
The match between Germany and Argentina was tense and entertaining. Both teams were not going to give up a win easily. However, it wasn’t until 113 minutes that Germany would make a move. Mario Götze who had come on as substitute for Miroslav Klose stunned Argentina with an unbelievable goal. The goal proved to be enough to give Germany a 1-0 victory.
With the victory over Argentina, Germany won their first World Cup in 24 years and their 4th World Cup trophy overall, putting them level with Italy for winning the World Cup four times, and just behind Brazil who have five. Germany also became the first European team to prevail in a World Cup in the Latin American soil.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi won FIFA’s ‘Golden Ball’ award as the best player while Colombia’s young striker James Rodriguez got the golden boot award as top scorer with six goals. Germany’s Manuel Neuer won the World Cup Golden Glove award for the tournament’s best goalkeeper. Thomas Mueller was second, with five goals.
