Green Protocol for Attukal Pongala to reduce Plastic footprint!

Suchitwa Mission and city corporation plan to collect 25,000 steel plates and glasses through sponsorship.

Trivandrum Corporation along with Suchitwa Mission will introduce a ‘green protocol’ for this year Attukal Pongala. The green protocol aims to reduce the plastic use by devotees during the Attukal Pongala which will be held February 23.

Under the new initiative, Civic body has asked the voluntary organizations and individuals who distribute food and water to devotees to refrain from using disposable glasses and paper. Civic body has also launched ‘Ammakkoru Steel Glass programme,’ where people can donate steel glass and tumbler for serving water and food to devotees thronging the city to offer Pongala on February 23.

The green protocol aims to reduce the plastic use by devotees during the Attukal Pongala which will be held February 23.

Counters will be opened at 15 temples where city residents can turn up and contribute steel glasses and plates at a rate of one per family. Besides, the Suchitwa Mission and city corporation plan to collect 25,000 steel plates and glasses through sponsorship.

Collection centres will be opened at Ganapathy Temple at Thampanoor, Control Room near Attukal Temple, near Manacaud Veliyapally, near Palayam Church, Thiruvallam Parasurma Temple, Udiyannoor Devi Temple, Poojappura Mandapam, Karamana Muthuraman Temple, Elamkavil Temple, Medical College, Mahadevar Temple, Kazhakuttom, Venpalavattom Temple, Karikkakam Devi Temple, and Palayam Hanuman Temple.

Surveillance checks to ensure food safety and hygiene will begin from Friday.

The food safety department will also take part in the mission. Vendors selling food items will have to go through a registration process. So far 200 voluntary organizations have registered with the food safety department for Pongala. Surveillance checks to ensure food safety and hygiene will begin from Friday.
