Kerala implements Green Protocol to keep weddings plastic-free

Green protocol for wedding functions will be implemented with the help of district administrations, panchayat authorities and socio-cultural and religious organisations.

Soon, weddings in Kerala will become green as Kerala government is coming out with a ‘green-protocol’ to make the occasion more nature-friendly.

With Green protocol in place, use of plastic and other non-degradable materials such as disposable glasses and plates and thermocol decorations will have to be avoided at wedding functions. Instead, people will be asked to use tumblers, plates and other utensils made of glass, steel or another environment- friendly materials.

With Green protocol in place, use of  plastic and other non-degradable materials such as disposable glasses and plates and thermocol decorations will have to be avoided at wedding functions.

The green protocol will be implemented by Suchitwa Mission the state nodal agency for sanitation. The program has already been implemented in Kannur, Ernakulam, Kollam and Alappuzha on a pilot basis. Ernakulam district administration is issuing green marriage certificate for those weddings which abide by the protocol completely.

Green protocol for the wedding was launched as part of Kerala Government’s anti-plastic drive and Green-Kerala Mission.

The core objective of the initiative is to reduce the use of plastic in daily life. Plastic articles including glasses and plates are used in large numbers during functions, especially marriage ceremonies in the state,” C V Joy, Director (Operations), Suchitwa Mission told PTI.

With green protocol in place, the government hopes to reduce the amount of plastic in the long run.

We can reuse, recycle and reduce plastic. But, even if we reuse such non-degradable articles, there will not be much decline in its presence. So, reducing its use is the more effective way to achieve our plastic-free society goal,” he said.

Green protocol for wedding functions will be implemented with the help of district administrations, panchayat authorities and socio-cultural and religious outfits for the initiative.
