Green Tax on Vehicles Older Than 10 Years From January 1

Vehicles that don’t pay Green tax will not get any service from the motor vehicles department.

In order to curb pollution, State government has decided to implement “Green Tax” on old vehicles that are more than 10 years old. The tax was announced in the last state budget and will be enforced from January 1.

The green tax will be applicable to transport vehicles that are more than 10 years old and non-transport vehicles over 15 years old. However, Three-wheelers and two-wheelers have been exempted from paying tax.

As per the government order, transport vehicles that fall in the categories of light, medium and heavy motor vehicle will have to remit a fee of Rs 200, Rs 300 and Rs 400 respectively for one year. Meanwhile vehicles that come under non-transport category, have to remit Rs 400 that will have validity for five years. The green tax is also applicable for those vehicles that are coming to the state from other states. Vehicles that don’t pay Green tax will not get any service from the motor vehicles department.

The penalty for the defaulters has not been specified yet. Also there is not yet a time period with which the tax needs to be paid. Motor vehicles department sources said that since no specific penalty has been recommended, the Section 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act will be applicable in which first offence will be a fine of Rs100 and for any second or subsequent offence with fine which may extend to Rs 300.
