India’s 1st ‘Sports Hub’ to come up at Kariyavattom Greenfield International Stadium

The Greenfield Stadium will host two home matches of India in the FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament.

Soon Trivandrum will be the epicentre of sports as country’s first ‘Sports Hub’ will come up in the state capital.

The idea is to turn the Greenfield Stadium at Karyavattom into a world-class coaching centre for various games and sports such as cricket, tennis and football. A sports academy headed by former Indian cricket captain Anil Kumble is behind this initiative. The academy will take over the day-to-day running of the sports hub in the stadium.

IL&FS also formed the ‘Kariyavattom Sports Facilities Limited’ for the maintenance and up keep of the stadium. The marketing and operations for 16 years will be done by a professional team under the IL & FS Company.

Earlier, IL&FS has presented a project about the sport hub at the business conclave organised by Malayala Manorama in Dubai. It is learnt that IL&FS has some big plans for the stadium, including a sports tourism concept which is very new in the country.

Stadium to get new name

IL &FS will auction the name of the stadium – now called as ‘Greenfield International Stadium, Kariyavattom’. Qatar Airways, Oman Air and Emirates airlines companies are in the fray. Once the name is auctioned the stadium will be known in the name of the company that wins the right. It’s a common practise to auction the name of the stadiums.

Sports tourism

Sports tourism will give a boost to Kerala’s tourism industry. Under this concept, tourists arriving here will have opportunities to watch matches in the stadium. Friendly matches for tourist and interaction with sportspersons and officials will be organised as part of sports tourism.

A world-class sports institute

According to the reports a private company from Australia as part of agreement with the Australian Government will start a sports event management institute at the stadium.

Work on the Pitch started

The work on the laying the pitch and Ground has started and it is expected to be over by August. For this 1400 loads of high quality sand is being used for the construction of the ground. And for turf, high quality grass will be used.

The Greenfield Stadium will host two home matches of India in the FIFA World Cup qualifying tournament. The stadium may also become the venue to some of the home matches of Kerala Blasters in the ISL and the T20 World Cup 2016. However, final talks regarding this is in progress.
