Kerala’s first women friendly auto rickshaws to be inaugurated in Trivandrum

Decision to introduce women friendly auto rickshaw came after it was found that, the number of complaints against errant auto drivers filed by women passengers has increased.

In the light of increasing crime against women the City Police department has decided to introduce ‘Women Friendly’ auto rickshaws for women in Trivandrum. The service will be rolled out within 30 days.

The service will be available at Thampanoor Central railway station, Bus station, East fort, Ayurveda College, Palyalam, Vellayambalam, Medical College in the first phase.

To identify the ‘Women friendly’ rickshaws, the authorities have decided to give special colours to the rickshaws. The women-only auto rickshaws in Jharkhand and Gurgaon have been given pink colours. Men can also ride the women-friendly rickshaws, however priority will be given to women passengers.

The rickshaws will be driven by male drivers. City Police has already started collecting details and other information about the drivers. A panel which include Control room assistant Commissioner will select the drivers. Already more than 2000 rickshaw drivers have applied for the scheme. The drivers will be given training on how they should behave towards women passengers. The training will be undertaken by Sakhi an organization for women.  Based on a recent study Sakhi put forward some guidelines to ensure safety of women passengers.

May Auto-rickshaw driver’s unions in the city have welcomed the ‘ Women- friendly’ auto rickshaw scheme. The project will be implemented only after obtaining permission from the Road Transport Authority. This is the first time such a project is implemented in the state.
