Liver Transplant Unit getting ready at Trivandrum Medical College!

The liver transplant Unit coming up at Medical College Trivandrum is almost ready with 80% of the work completed.

When it becomes functional, it will be the first hospital in the public sector to have a liver transplantation unit in Kerala. The unit is being setup in a record time of less than 18 months. However, it took 2 years after the announcement to materialize. In comparison, major hospitals in the state are said to have taken 2-4 years for setting up a similar unit.

The setting up of the special ICU and supporting ICUs are progressing at a fast pace. The high-end equipments will be purchased through Kerala Medical Services Corporation Ltd (KMSCL). If in case of delay, the equipemts will be borrowed from KIMS.

Recruitment of personnel is under way and the entire team would be set up within a short time. If the unit gets the right candidate, the transplantation surgery can be carried out anytime. The training of the surgeons, anaesthesiologists, radiologists, pathologists, nursing and other paramedical staff has already begun in association with KIMS, who has signed a MoU with Trivandrum Medical College. On a rotational basis staffs will be sent to training at a private hospital in Chennai.
