Planetarium to open by May! Evolution Park and Robotics corner to become crowd-pullers

The officials at Kerala State Science and Technology are racing against time to reopen the planetarium before the summer vacation is over.

Unfortunately, the planetarium will be ready only by mid-May, which is almost the end of the vacation. That means, most children especially those from outside Trivandrum might miss the spectacle. The planetarium was initially intended to open in February. But the opening was rescheduled to April owing to several reasons. Now it’s again pushed to mid-May.

Fortunately, KSSTM has a backup plan to lure children. KSSTM has spruced up the Evolution Park and a Robotics corner inside the campus.

The reason for the delay is the change in the design of the planetarium. The existing floor is not able to bear the weight of the new ‘nanodome’, forcing officials to look for alternative design. The tilted dome with seamless joints is designed to provide an immersive experience.

The Evolution Park is under minor repair, but the officials are confident that it will be fully functional within a week’s time. The evolution park has scaled-down models of dinosaurs which will be mechanically animated. Currently 13 realistic models of dinosaurs like Triceratops, Dimetrodon and Stegosaurus are in place. From next year, people will see changes in the light and sound show which comes alive at the park in the evenings. The show has been designed after researching light and sound shows that are carried out in other parts of the country. It will also have an animated music fountain.

The robots in ‘Robotics Corner’ will be housed in a glass cabin. This is after the theft of one of the robots, last year. Though a police case was filed, the robot could not be located.

On February 28, 2015, the footfall was close to 1500. In March, the number of people who came to visit the campus has been close to 500. Once the planetarium starts functioning, the number of visitors arriving at the planetarium will increase several-fold.
