Veli will soon find a place among the international tourist spot, if everything goes according to plan.
The state government is coming up with an ambitious Rs.5500 crore plan that will redefine Veli into an international tourist centre. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has forwarded the project report to Chief Secretary for further study.
The idea is to develop Veli into a tourism-cum-shopping zone which will rival those in Singapore and Malaysia.
The plan was mooted in view of Vizhinjam Port project. As there will be a cruise terminal at the proposed port, Trivandrum will witness a huge influx of tourists once the port is open, creating immense tourism and shopping opportunities. The idea is to develop Veli into a tourism-cum-shopping zone which will rival those in Singapore and Malaysia.
The multi-crore project for Veli envisages gigantic shopping facilities clubbed with tourism opportunities. The project will come up at 60 acre site which was given to International Convention Centre and a 36 acres which lies close to Veli.
There will be a huge amusement park and a theme park which will be modelled on the lines of Disneyland. While the shopping mall include retails stores of world’s leading brands, large food courts, convention centres, and adequate parking spaces etc. Apart from these there will be an Oceanarium where people can go and explore it quite up close and personal.
A 7-star hotel is also planned so that tourists who visit Trivandrum can be able to stay at Veli. Veli will also become an international spot for water sports as it has both sea and lake.
The plan is to implement the project in CIAL model. Foreign investment will also be sought if it’s necessary. The project report was prepared two years ago but sadly the report never saw the light until now. Let’s hope that this time, there won’t be any hiccups and the project gets implemented on time.
