Strict action against haphazard parking of buses at East Fort

Officials of the department will take measures such as cancellation of licence of drivers of vehicles that stop and park in a haphazard manner.

In the wake of the recent accident at East Fort that killed 56-year-old Sulochana, the Motor Vehicle Department has decided to take strict action against KSRTC drivers and other vehicles that park haphazardly at East Fort.

Haphazard parking of vehicles on the road often led to accidents. It also causes long traffic snarls in the area. The buses are only allowed to stop to pick up passengers. However, buses keep idling there for long.  Drivers were also in the habit of stopping on the road, without entering the bus bay. Officials of the department will take measures such as cancellation of licence of drivers of vehicles that stop and park in a haphazard manner.

Jaywalkers also cause accidents

Another reason that contributes to the accidents in the area is the Jaywalking by pedestrians. Pedestrians rarely use the zebra crossing and cross the road at will causing harm not only to themselves but also to other road users.  Traffic police find it very hard to prevent jaywalkers.

When jaywalking was found as a reason for accidents, the authorities had raised the height of the central median to 75 cm. But a death happened when a pedestrian tried to cross by jumping off from the raised median. Thus authorities used wire meshes to close the median.

Experts suggest construction of a foot overbridge or subway for safe passage of pedestrians. However, police said that people who do not show patience to cross through the pedestrian crossing, are less likely to use such facilities.
