Trivandrum Central Railway Station modernization begins

The total estimated cost for the work is Rs 6.6 crore. Modernization project is a joint initiative of the railways and tourism department.

After a long wait, the modernization of Trivandrum Central Railway station got a fresh momentum with Union minister of state for human resources development Shashi Tharoor laying foundation stone to develop the station into a world-class one.

Work on four escalators, three lifts, one foot over bridge, and a skywalk connecting the KSRTC bus terminal with the second entry of the Central railway station on Power House road were launched on Saturday. Though, six escalators had been planned for the station, work of only four will begin soon. Two escalators will be near the main entrance and the other two will come up at platforms.

The two escalators which had to be withheld for a while are the escalators planned to connect Thamapanoor and East Fort with the skywalk. In the second phase, these escalators will also be constructed. Once the project is completed, the facilities will help the passengers who want to change over from Thampanoor bus stand to East fort.  Two Jansadharan Ticket Booking Sevaks (JTBS) counters will also come up at the entry point of the skywalk.

According to Rediff.com, Trivandrum Central Railway Station was selected as the 8th best railway station in India. It is the largest and busiest railway station in the state in terms of passenger movement. It is also the most profitable station under Southern Railway division.
