Capital city is geared up to host Attukal Pongala – the world’s largest annual religious congregation of women on February 26. Millions of women from various parts of the country will gather in the city to offer Pongala to Goddess Attukal Devi.
The city is already crowded indicating a massive turn out of women on Pongala day.We can see earthen pots stacked on the sidewalks everywhere and shops selling Pongala kits, Pongala sarees are raking in money with the women going on a buying spree.
Already women have begun to arrive and have occupied their places in the temple premises for setting up the aduppu (oven).Since the temple premises cannot accommodate all the devotees, the entire city will be thrown open to them.
The rituals commence at 10.45 AM with the lightning of the ‘Pandara Aduppu’ by temple priest and the sanctification of Pongala will start at 2.30 PM.
The Guinness Book of Records listed the festival as the world’s largest annual gathering of women in 1997, when 1.5 million devotees converged. Last year more than 3 million women participated in the Attukal Pongala. And the number is expected to rise this year. The Attukal Pongala will be telecasted live on all leading Malayalam Channels.
