The District Traffic Advisory Committee mooted downsizing of two well-known traffic roundabouts in the city in order to ease the traffic flow. The two recommended traffic roundabouts include Asan Square at Palayam and Annie Mascarene Square at Vazhuthacaud.
At the council meeting chaired by the District Collector Biju Prabhakar, participants said ‘out-of-proportion’ traffic squares and roundabouts added to traffic snarls. The committee concluded that removal of unnecessary islands and squares and the installation of traffic signals would help the smooth flow of traffic. Most of the roundabouts have statues of prominent personalities and with the new decision, future of these statues remains uncertain.
Meeting also discussed other measures to ease traffic congestion the city. Levying parking fee from those who park in public spaces and in front of public buildings was also considered. A meeting would be convened with school authorities and PTA office-bearers to discuss allowing parking of vehicles near schools after levying a fee. Steps will be taken to ensure to put an end to encroachment of footpaths. Stringent action would be taken against wayside merchants and those who erect unauthorised boards and pile up construction materials, on pavements.
Corporation secretary S Venkatesapathy, Councillor Leelamma Issac, representatives of K Muraleedharan MLA, Police, TRIDA, Kerala Road Fund Board, PWD, RTO and trade union leaders attended the meeting.
