VSSC Trivandrum Creates Revolutionary Material That Can Protect Buildings and Automobiles From Fire!

The technology was originally developed to protect rocket launch vehicles from high-temperature and fire to which they are exposed during the initial moments of launch.

The scientists at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) Trivandrum have come up with a revolutionary product that could protect homes from fire and prevent water seepage in concrete buildings.

Called as ceramic-polymer hybrid (CASPOL) by VSSC scientists, the product is an indigenously developed, easy-to-use flame-proof coating, from the VSSC stable. Caspol can protect public transport systems and people residing in thatched homes from fire accidents. The same product that prevents fire will also prevent water seepage in concrete buildings.

Caspol coating can withstand temperature up to 800 degree Celsius.

According to scientists, seats in automobiles, public transport system and seat cushions of railway coaches can be made fireproof when Caspol is applied, thus preventing fire accidents. Besides its ability to protect against fire and high temperature, Caspol can also make surfaces waterproof. Caspol when applied over the surface of concrete buildings, the coating fill up the micro cracks and holes on concrete preventing any water from seeping in. That’s not all, the high emissivity of Caspol will reduce the temperature inside the building by at least 5 to 6 degree Celsius.

Caspol is also eco-friendly and is free of toxic materials. It can be applied to many materials such as masonry surfaces, textiles, paper, thatched leaves and wood to advanced materials like polyurethane and phenolic-based thermal insulation foam pads.

This is not the first time VSSC has come up with something revolutionary. Earlier, they created world’s lightest material and a low-cost human heart pump using rocket technology.
