Waterway Along Parvathy Puthanar to Increase Tourism! Cleanup and Beautification also Planned

Biju Prabhakar requested the government to revive the ‘Theerapadham’ project which rehabilitates unauthorised dwellers on either side of Parvathy Puthanar.

With an aim to increase the tourism potential of the capital, authorities are planning to create a waterway along the Parvathy Puthanar canal.

In a report submitted to the State government, District Collector Biju Prabhakar has proposed regular services from Kovalam to Varkala after de-weeding the Parvathy Puthanar, Akkulam-Veli Lake and Trivandrum-Shoranur (TS) canal. This will also help to decongest the National Highway to some extent.

The project also plans cleaning up of Parvathy Puthanar and to beautify it by creating walkways and develop the region as a commercial hub.

He also recommended taking forward the proposed Aeropolis project, which involves developing an Airport city with the Trivandrum International Airport at the centre of the activities. As per the existing Aeropolis plan, the project included the establishment of a convention centre and utilisation of the waterway of Parvathy Puthanar, along with the development of the airport. Earlier a multi-model transit hub was mooted for Trivandrum International Airport by integrating all modes of transport – Air, Road, Metrorail and Waterway.

Another proposal was to establish a railway siding from Kazhakuttom, which passes through VSSC at Thumba and Trivandrum International Airport, en route to Kovalam and Vizhinjam.

Among the other proposals was establishing a railway siding from Kazhakuttom, which passed by the VSSC at Thumba and Trivandrum International Airport, en route to Kovalam and Vizhinjam. It would also benefit employees of the VSSC as well as those headed to the airport who would not have to rely on taxis and auto-rickshaws.

Another proposal is to connect Nemom to Vizhinjam via rail so that Good trains headed for Vizhinjam port and Tamil Nadu can be diverted to reduce traffic congestion of trains headed towards the Trivandrum Central railway station.
