The Prisons Department is planning to make a special jail where convicted couples can live together with their children.<\/p>\n<p>Prison department will follow the model of <strong>Sanganer Open Jail in Rajasthan<\/strong>, the first prison in the country to implement this project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prison will be in line with the jail at Sanganer in Rajasthan. There the convicted couples live together and even go out for work,\u201d said DGP Prisons, Alexander Jacob.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the males of the couples there even runs a petrol pump outside the jail. But the attitude of our society has not developed to that level.\u00a0 So at the initial stage we are planning to make arrangements for the couples to live together with their children,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the prison department is waiting for the approval from the government to go ahead with the initiative. If the government approves the project, the <strong>&#8216;Family Prison&#8217; will be set up at Poojappura Central jail.<\/strong> If it becomes a reality it would be the first one in South India and the second in the country after Sanganer jail. Three couples are serving terms in various jails of the state. On Monday, South India&#8217;s first open prison for women was opened on the Poojappura Central Prison compound.<\/p>\n<p>Many countries allow inmates to live with their families as it will help the inmates to break through their criminal mindsets and to reintegrate into society.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If everything goes according to plan, three convicted couples in the state will have the chance to live together along with their children.
