YouTube viewers may soon have to pay to view the content on premium channels. It\u2019s rumoured that YouTube may introduce subscription service for a series of channels, possibly as soon as this week. The content on the subscription channels will be in addition to the millions of videos people watch for free on YouTube. It’s not clear whether the paid videos will come with advertising.<\/p>\n
Earlier YouTube said that they are looking into creating a “subscription platform” that provides its partners with a way to generate revenue which is higher than video rentals and placing ads in and around content.<\/p>\n
The subscription model will help video producers make more revenue from niche audiences. Currently, videos in YouTube make money \u00a0mostly from advertising.<\/p>\n
“For people who create great value but for only a narrow interest group, I think that the potential for pay channels unlocks opportunities for creating revenue streams,” said Lucas Watson, YouTube’s vice president of sales and marketing.<\/p>\n
YouTube has moved away from its early days as a destination for user-generated content to professionally produced video. It has sold and rented movies and TV shows from major studios since late 2008.<\/p>\n
“It’s a whole new skill set to develop: to convince people to actually take out their credit card, even for one cent,” said Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s vice president and global head of content partnerships.<\/p>\n
Google Inc bought YouTube in 2006 for $1.76billion when the site had an estimated 50 million users worldwide. Now, YouTube has more than 1 billion visitors a month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
