The Communications Division of the Kerala Electronics Development Corporation (KELTRON) will implement the project. State Police Chief K. S. Balasubramanian, Inspector General of Police Manoj Abraham and Keltron’s system specialist S. P. Gopakumar are among those involved in the project.

The technology will enable the police to track and capture single or multiple faces of persons when they go through access-controlled channels covered from all angles with cameras. The faces captured by the surveillance camera are compared with the police mug shots of suspects, wanted persons, and those categorised as “barred or unwelcome guests” stored in the criminal database of the State and Central law-enforcement agencies. If the face of a person which appears on surveillance video matches that of any person on the Police criminal database, then the system will automatically trigger an alert, all in real time.

Police say that suspects cannot fool the system by varying one’s facial expressions or altering posture and make changes to hair-style or making beard or by wearing glasses. “Covering one’s face entirely may help evade the system. However, such actions will immediately arouse suspicion,” an officer says. In the next phase, the police will also launch more advanced version of the face-recognition technology to monitor crowd by using biometric characteristics of faces with that of persons on their database

The new system will be a force multiplier for law-enforcers monitoring vital installations. The true potential of the systems will increase when biometric face-recognition technology becomes more common.

Source

Kerala Police will integrate the latest face-recognition technology with its expanding surveillance camera network.
