The agreement and terms of conditions to be signed with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the general consultant for the projects in Trivandrum and Kozhikode have been cleared by the director board of Kerala Monorail Corporation Limited (KMCL). Since the general consultant and the executing agency are the same, a single agreement has been drafted for the projects of the two cities.

DMRC presented the Project report of in last December. Trivandrum Monorail projects spans 41.8Km and will be executed in two phases. The 22.2 Km from Technocity to Thampanoor will come under the first phase and the second phase includes Karamana-Neyyattinkara and Technocity- Attingal. The first phase with 19 stations is planned to commission in 2016 and will be operational by 2019, while second phase will start by 2018.

Total estimated cost of the project is Rs3,590 crore. Out of the 17.17 hectare needed for the first phase, 13.75 hectare is owned by the government, 0.58 hectare is owned by the railway and the rest 2.82 hectare is owned by private parties. Only 39 Families and 65 commercial buildings will be affected. It is also estimated that, when the Monorail is operational, city’s traffic density can be reduced by 40%. Ticket rate has also been decided with Rs8 per 2Km. Thus Technocity to Karamana will take only Rs30. Stations will be placed in every 1.5 Km and in every 5.5 minute a train will arrive.

Monorail trains are made using high-strength aluminium and are driven by electric motors with rubber tires. The main advantage is that, Monorail is free of air and noise pollution. Even though Monorails are fully automatic and needs no drivers, to ensure safety a driver will be present. Each train will have 3 A/C coaches with a carrying capacity of 525 passengers.

After many troubles and uncertainties, Monorail project in Trivandrum is becoming a reality.
