The fund would be allocated over a period of 3 years.

High speed marine highway comes with many advantages such as reducing the congestion on the roads, fuel consumption and pollution. The project plans to connect Trivandrum with Kasaragod with high-speed passenger ships which can achieve a speed of 40km/hr, through the coastal waters. The ships will be able to cover the entire distance by water almost as much time as it would take by train. Initially, the project will be used for tourism and the government intervention would be limited to select services to demonstrate economic viability of the project.

The main investment for the high speed marine highway will be for acquisition of high-speed ships, which costs about Rs 10 crore. According to the current plan, five ships will be bought in the beginning, – two of them will be operated on Trivandrum-Kozhikode route, two on Trivandrum- Kochi route and one in Kochi-Kollam route. Already, there are 3 high-speed passenger ships – MV Parali, MV Cheriyapani and MV Valiyapani – operating between Kozhikode and Lakshadweep.

Also Read:

Natural History Museum in Trivandrum Renovated

Land acquisition proves to be the trickiest part of any such project.
