The master plan and detailed project report pertaining to the Vizhinjam container terminal and international port has been released by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and the EIA (environmental impact assessment) report is now before the State Pollution Control Board. Public hearing for this will be conducted on July 29 and the recommendations made during this one month period will be incorporated in the report and it will be submitted to Ministry of Environment and Forest for environmental clearance. The estimated cost for the first phase was Rs.3, 840 crore. Oommen Chandy said that the project will be completed in a time bound manner.<\/p>\n

Largest in the country<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Vizhinjam international seaport will have the deepest draft in the country and it will be able to berth mega vessels of 18,000TEU capacity.\u00a0 These vessels would require minimum water depths of 18m and no other ports in the country have this depth.\u00a0 The first vessels of 18,000 TEU will be out only in 2014. The Port would have a total quay length of 2000 meters in three phases. The first phase of the project will include an 800-metre-long berth with a breakwater area of 3,180 metres and an adjoining 500-metre-long container yard. The port will also have a 500 metres berth for Cruise terminal, 120 metres for Coast Guard wharf and 500 metres of Navy wharf.<\/p>\n

Provision for Shipyard too<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The master plan for the Vizhinjam international container transshipment terminal (ICTT) has left an option for establishing a shipyard at Vizhinjam. \u00a0A shipyard\/ship repair facility can be planned in the area earmarked for Phase-3 container development. \u00a0In 2011, the Cochin Shipyard Ltd had submitted a report to the government saying that Vizhinjam has the \u2018potential\u2019 for a shipyard. It requires a minimum of 100 acres with 1.5 kilometres of waterfront area. However it was considered impractical and the shipyard proposal was put on the back burner.<\/p>\n
