{"id":11204,"date":"2013-06-07T17:33:13","date_gmt":"2013-06-07T12:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.entecity.com\/?p=11204"},"modified":"2013-06-07T17:33:13","modified_gmt":"2013-06-07T12:03:13","slug":"clean-up-project-for-the-karamana-river-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entecity.com\/news\/clean-up-project-for-the-karamana-river-launched\/","title":{"rendered":"Clean-up project for the Karamana river launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a bid to restore the heavily pollutted Karamana river and salvage its ecology, the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) has come up with an integrated river basin management project which focuses on minimizing pollution and cleaning up a one- km downstream stretch.<\/p>\n<p>TRIDA (Trivadrum Development Authority ) will implement the project and already State Planning Board has approved an assistance of Rs.5 crore for the project. A recent study carried out by a technical expert committee headed by Executive Vice President, KSCSTE, V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai found that dumping of waste into the river had affected the water quality. Erosion, sand-mining, encroachment, and growth of weeds along the river\u2019s course were found to be obstructing the water flow.<\/p>\n<p>According to the project report, leachate from garbage dumps at Jagathy, Valiasala, and Iranimuttam are polluting the river. Discharge of untreated sewage, waste water from houses, schools, and community halls, disposal of poultry and slaughterhouse waste, waste water from dhobi ghats and encroachment of the river are the other major sources of pollution.<\/p>\n<p>Eradication of pollution from the Thiruvallam Thodu, an artificial canal branching off from the river, and eco restoration of the Killi, a tributary of the river will be addressed in the frst phase. Considering the health hazards faced by people and the large number of devotees visiting the Parasurama temple, check-dam or vented cross bar and a pump house will be constructed at the origin of the canal to maintain adequate flow of water at the ghat near the temple. \u00a0A one-km stretch of Killiyar between Myladikadavu and Iranimuttam has been identified for implementing the eco restoration project.<\/p>\n<p>Greening and beautification of the banks of the canal will also be carried out under the scheme. Measures to prevent the inflow of waste from populated areas along the banks and consuctruction of eco toilets and public comfort stations at select points will be carried out. Home Guards will be deployed along the banks to deter polluters.<\/p>\n<p>The Karamana River which was considered to be the pride of the city once, does not flow quiet anymore.
