Visit the Art Gallery at the Alliance Francaise de Trivandrum and you are drawn to a painting in red and black contour: a woman who touches your soul in an impalpable agony. This is the artwork of Sajitha Shankar<\/strong> which emits a selfness arising from pure despair.<\/p>\n

Through her new series, \u201cAlterbodies<\/strong>,\u201d exhibited at Alliance Francaise de Trivandrum, contemporary artist Sajitha is attempting to move away from the conventional description of female body and tries to portray women\u2019s body as a source of energy and creativity in sixteen vibrant canvases. \u00a0\u00a0Alterbodies is an intense search for the self, a celebration of womanhood, a quest for the feminine in nature and in the universe. It is the product of years of evolution and exploration starting from her charcoal portraits to her sketches and etchings done at times for works of poetry.<\/p>\n

Sujatha\u2019s art work always tries to bring the problems of women into the forefront and portrays the power of women and her struggle for existence. She has created charcoal portraits, archetypal paintings and drawings which depicts anonymity of women as mother, nature and creativity. The portraits can be summed up as going beyond the male gaze of a women\u2019s body.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeyond the biological aspect, women have a lot to explore: they have energy, the power of intuition and infinite potential\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Sajitha grew up in Kumaranallor in Kottayam district and was graduated in painting from College of Arts, Trivandrum<\/strong>. She is an internationally recognized artist and one of the most feted contemporary female artists from Kerala. \u00a0She has won several awards, including Charles Wallace Award from the British Council, senior fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India, French Scholarship for Artists and the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Award.<\/p>\n

Sajitha has conducted 28 solo exhibitions across India and abroad and participated in exhibitions, solo and group in Germany, Austria, France, United Kingdom, Spain, Japan, and Netherlands and so on. Her painting exhibition at Alliance de Francaise, Trivandrum will come to end on June 20.<\/p>\n
