As part of saving energy, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has decided to install automatic streetlights in the city. The new lights will be based on light sensor technology which enables the streetlights to switch on and off automatically depending upon the availability of day light.<\/p>\n
As of now, Trivandrum division of KSEB has selected 741 in addition to the 287 chosen locations earlier. \u201cIf things go as planned, the lighting system will be implemented in all these places in a short time. However, we are planning to undertake the project at different levels,\u2019\u2019 said KSEB executive engineer, Trivandrum Division, Ravivarman.<\/p>\n
Installation of automatic lighting system will be completed within six months. With the new automation system, 10% more power could be saved. The bulbs will have a life span for at least five years, after which they would be replaced. In the phase 2 of the project, more areas, especially in the rural parts of the district, will be selected for the installation of the automatic street lighting system.<\/p>\n
With the introduction of automatic streetlights, KSEB can charge the exact amount for the usage, which will be beneficial to the local governing bodies and the Board. KSEB also said that monthly billing system would be resorted to from the day the facility is implemented. In the present situation, when the state is facing acute power shortage, the new initiative to reduce power consumption will be a great relief to KSEB.
