Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) Trivandrum<\/strong> under the supervision of Indian Space research Organisation (ISRO) is a premier institute dedicated for space research. \u00a0Started in 2007, it is the Asia\u2019s first Space Institute and the first in the world to offer the complete range of undergraduate, post graduate, doctoral programmes with specific focus to space science, technology and applications. It has been declared a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act of 1956.<\/p>\n

How to reach IIST Thiruvananthapuram<\/strong><\/h2>\n

IIST Trivandrum<\/span> is located at Valiamala, 18 Kilometer from the city, on the way to the famous Ponmudi Hills. Nearest railway station is the Trivandrum Railway Station which is 18Km away and nearest airport is the Trivandrum International Airport 30Km away. The nearest major town is Nedumangadu. There are frequent bus services from the Thampanoor Bus Station to here. You can also hire a taxi too.<\/p>\n

Facilities offered<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The campus creates a unique learning environment for the students. Spread across 100 acres, IIST is one of the best institutions in the country which houses academic blocks, research laboratories, computer centre, information centre, library, administrative area and residential complex for faculty and support staff. It also houses students activity centre, health care centre, health club and sports complex. In addition to hostels for students, there will also be studio type apartments in the campus for research students. IIST also has a small observatory on campus equipped with a 8 inch Newtonian telescope.<\/p>\n

With a student-faculty ratio of 8:1, IIST also has a very effective mentoring system where every faculty member has a batch of 2 students to guide, support and enhance the student learning process. As on today, IIST Trivandrum has 575 B.Tech students, 22 M.Tech students, 20 Ph.D students and with 75 faculty members.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Courses and Departments<\/strong><\/h2>\n

IIST offers undergraduate (B.Tech), master’s (M.Tech) and Ph.D programs in space science and technology, and also serves as a research center. Doctoral programmes in basic sciences and post-doctoral programmes are also offered. IIST Thiruvanathapuram<\/strong> has three main departments- Department of Science which has subjects on Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Space Sciences; Department of Technology which contains Aerospace Engineering and Avionics; Department of Humanities. It also makes use of Research & Development infrastructure of the Department of Space apart from creating its own resources to train the young mind in high technology areas.<\/p>\n

Admission to IIST Trivandrum<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Admission to the IIST Thiruvanathapuram<\/em> will be made through the All India Rank list published by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The applicants need to qualify the JEE advanced exam and the marks obtained in the exam will be the criteria for eligibility of the candidate. For B.Tech programmes in Aerospace Engineering, Avionics and Physical Sciences, there are a total 156 seats. The applications for admission to M.Tech courses are invited directly and students are shortlisted based on their GATE score and projects undertaken by them. \u00a0The expenditure of each student during their entire course is supported by ISRO in the form of scholarships or assistantships. Successful students are subsequently absorbed into ISRO as scientists.<\/p>\n

IIST Trivandrum<\/strong> is rated as one of the most prestigious engineering institutes in India. It is the only institute in the country, which offers a B.Tech. Degree in Space Technology, and subjects exclusive to space science and technology<\/p>\n
