The rush was there right from morning with parents who took their kids to make them learn the way of writing a telegram, in the age of SMS and emails. Though people from different age groups came, the most enthusiastic ones were the schools and college students.<\/p>\n<p>At the CTO, many youngsters sent crisp but mushy love messages to their heartthrobs, elders sent one last message to their dear ones miles away and some just wanted to witness the final moments of a service that had informed them of their first job \u2014 were all there.<\/p>\n<p>Some employees nostalgically point out: \u201cWe should have retained the service. It\u2019s a public need. The postcard is priced at 50 paisa and the government incurs a loss on it. Yet the postcard remains in use because it\u2019s an obligation and service to society. The telegram service should also be retained as a service to people of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In India, the first telegraphic communication was transmitted between <strong>Alipore and Diamond Harbour<\/strong>, a distance of about 50 km, on <strong>November 5, 1850.<\/strong> In Kerala, first telegraph service commenced in the year <strong>1864 in Trivandrum, Alapuzha, Kollam,<\/strong> \u00a0on the telegraph circuits between Ernakulam and Thrissur.<\/p>\n<p>The 163-year-old telegram service in India was once the fastest way to get across good news and bad, touching the lives of millions of Indians every year.
