Then suddenly your computer freezes and all your work is gone. As you desperately try to restart the computer, a blue screen appeared with some random numbers staring back at you. You face the hard reality – Your Window is dead. You may either angrily push the reset button and if you are lucky you will see your desktop again or blame it all on Bill Gates.

At some point we all (not the Mac Users) have been visited by the ghost of windows A.K.A – the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD)

So what exactly is Blue Screen of Death (Bsod)? Well for starters it appears when windows crashes and cannot recover from the error. It is called the Windows “Stop Screen” and it shows the reason for the crash. Unfortunately it is very difficult for a normal person to unravel the BSoD and find out what caused the death of your PC. That’s where we come in. We will show you to solve the mystery so that you can fix your Pc.

First thing to do is to try rebooting your PC, in most cases you can fix the error with this method .If you are not lucky with this method, you need to diagnose both hardware and software.

When you encounter a BSoD, you have to ask yourself did you recently installed a new piece of hardware or software or just updated some drivers? If yes, then there is good chance that this caused the BSoD.

If it’s caused due to Software then undo the changes you made and reboot again.

1. Start up your System in the “safe Mode” and perform a virus and Spyware check. If you found anything eliminate the cause and reboot the system again.

2. Apply all the available updates and tweaks from Windows. Microsoft regularly releases new update to make the system more stable.

3. Update the drivers to more stable version

4. Revert the hardware changes into default settings using the ‘Device Manager’. Recent change in hardware also can cause the BSoD.

5. Roll Back the BIOS settings to Default Profile.

6. Make sure that there is a minimum empty space in the Windows Partition. BSoD can occur if there is not enough free space on C-Drive. Microsoft strongly recommends to maintain at least 100MB of Free space on C-Drive (Primary Partition).

Some other solution for Blue screen of death includes:

Startup using Last Known Good Configuration to revert any recent registry and driver changes.

Use System Restore to go back to previous state in safe mode

Roll Back device driver to a more stable version( if new version is not stable)

If you think software is not the cause of your problem then start investigation on your hardware. If you think software is not the cause of your problem then start investigation on your hardware. If you are not comfortable with unplugging your hardware components, call a qualified technician.

Swap Video Cards

Turn off the system and remove the Video Card. Then restart the PC and go to BIOS by pressing F2 or Delete key. Check the PCI-E Bus Speed to see if it’s not above the stable speed and it’s not over clocked. It is recommended to set the BUS to 100MHz or Auto in the BIOS. If problem is with your Video card change the video card.

A Sound Advice

If you are using an ADD-On sound card, BsoD can occur when your ON-Board Sound card on the mother board conflicts with your ADD-ON. To avoid this disable your on-board soundcard in the BIOS. If the problem is with your sound card driver, note the application you were running when BSoD occurred. Adjust the sound option of the application correctly and download any new patches.

The Anti-virus Issue

Contrary to popular belief installing many anti-virus softwares doesn’t increase protection. In fact it will lead to BSoD. So stick with one major player on the market.

Change RAM

This is the easiest BSoD diagnosis. RAM must be compatible with your PC. Mismatched memory can cause many problems. Faulty RAM is well known for the cause of BSoD. Swap your RAM with other and if you find your RAM is the one causing BSoD, change the RAM. Also make sure the RAM is installed in the correct spot. Plus remove the RAM and clean it by blowing air, dust accumulated on the RAM can cause BSoD.

Check your cables

Most obvious solutions are sometimes overlooked. Checking your Hard drive cables can be solution to BSoD. Make sure you hard drive cables are connected properly and are not faulty. SATA cables are bad reputation for working loose. Sometimes internal wiring problems in the cables can cause BSoD. Change the cables if you find any problem.

Overheating

Sometimes Your Pc or laptop can overheat due to many resons.CPU cooling fans can fail or there is not enough ventilation for the hot air to escape. It’s a good thing to monitor your Pc’s temperature on a regular basis. Use softwares like Core Temp, Real Temp, SpeedFan etc. Over clocking can also lead to BSoD. Roll back your over clocked components to their default speeds.

BIOS is Calling

BIOS can sometimes get corrupt or face problem with a newly released Processor. The first thing you need to do is to update your BIOS. Sometimes reverting your BIOS to a previous state or default state can also help to solve your problem.

If you can write down the error codes shown in the Blue Screen of Death, you can search online for the solutions. Many forums online can offer advice and solutions to the problem you are facing. If none of the methods work, then you need to hand over your PC or laptop to authorized or local repair shop. No matter how careful we are sometimes bad things happen. So next time when you get the Blue Screen of Death you know what to do! And the most important things is to be patient as it require a lot of trial and error.

Imagine this – You are working on an important project or just playing a videogame.
