Initially, the smart card system will be linked to a network of pre-paid counter that will come up across at various parts of the city.<\/p>\n<p>The electronics department of the <strong>PWD<\/strong> will provide the technology and equipment for the project. Police and Motor Vehicle department (<strong>MVD<\/strong>) will add all the information about the auto-rickshaw, its owner, and driver in the smart cards. The prepaid counters will be equipped with devices which will remotely read the information in the cards. The police can then intimate the passengers the correct meter fare to their stated destination. The system is also expected to reduce queues at pre-paid counters.<\/p>\n<p>With the new system, police will be able to check whether MVD has validated the vehicle\u2019s fare meter, when the moment an auto-rickshaw checks into a pre-paid counter to take passengers.\u00a0 Law enforcers can also check whether the vehicle or its driver has been involved in any <strong>criminal offence<\/strong>. Traffic police will be given handheld remote smart card readers to identify rickshaws which break traffic rules.<\/p>\n<p>The new system is expected to be beneficial for long distance travellers especially women and children who disembark at railway stations and bus stands at odd hours.
