It has been two years since the Vilappilsala\u00a0Solid waste management factory<\/strong> <\/a>has been shutdown and a permanent solution for waste disposal in the city is nowhere in sight. Both the government and Trivandrum Corporation have tried their hand in various ways to crack the problem, but nothing concrete has happened and the city dwellers are still plagued by the mounting waste issue.<\/p>\n

Now, a youngster has come forward with an innovative solution which can benefit the city residents. Sumesh Issac<\/strong> who hails from Changanaserry has designed a bio gas plant which degrades waste at root level and produces combustible biogas and fertilizer. His innovation was selected as one of India\u2019s Best 60 innovations by America\u2019s R& D Institute Lockheed Martin.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Known as ‘Pleated dome biogas plant<\/strong>‘, it achieves 100% conversion of biodegradable waste, as and when it is generated, to combustible gas and fertilizer. \u00a0Existing technologies have drawbacks like vertical feeding, unpleasant smell and the risk of bursting or toppling.\u00a0The plant is economical and \u00a0is easy to mange.<\/p>\n

But, Sumesh’s design is free from all these problems. He employs the technology in which house-hold waste is fed to the plant fitted with PVC bellow bags which pumps the biogas in to a separate container. Meanwhile the liquid waste is collected and used as fertilizer. The Biogas plant is totally sealed and there is no risk of bursting and leaking.<\/p>\n

He has installed his plant in 10 households<\/strong> in the city who are all completely satisfied with the working of the plant.<\/p>\n

Sumesh claims that his biogas plant is one of a kind in the world for which he also received recognition from various international agencies. Though he approached the authorities with his innovation, he was met with indifference and bureaucratic arrogance.\u00a0 It is obvious that such an economic<\/strong> and easy to manage<\/strong> biogas plant can go a long way in solving the current waste management issue in the city but our authorities are unwilling the take a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
