KSSTM is launching a 3-day workshop from 4th September to equip master trainers who will educate sky gazers across Kerala on viewing techniques. KSSTM is joining hands with ASTRO-Kerala and the Sasthra Sahitya Parishad for conducting the workshop.

A total of 30 master trainers will be tutored on the general astronomy and mysteries of the comet at the KSSTM from October 4 to 6. These master trainers will then conduct lectures and workshops for the general public, school teachers and students on how to view the comet best.

From October 5 onwards, you can see Comet ISON using binoculars on the eastern horizon just before sunrise. From November 5 onwards, it will be visible to the naked eye. For the benefit of the people, KSSTM will direct its binoculars and telescopes on the ISON from October onwards.

Comet ISON was discovered in September 2012 by 2 amateur astronomers in Russia Artyom Novichonok and Vitaly Nevsky. Comet ISON at its brightest could be a very spectacular sight for the astronomers.

Why all the excitement?

Comet ISON is not an ordinary comet. ISON belongs to a group of comets known as sun-gazers. It will pass just 1.1 million miles from centre of the Sun on November 28 and will make a hairpin turn around the Sun on that date. ISON’s journey through the solar system is perilous and violent. If Comet ISON survives the Sun’s close encounter, the comet could flare up brilliantly to become a dazzling object in the night sky, possibly 10 times brighter than Venus, or maybe even brighter.

It is not sure whether the comet ISON survives the ordeal and that’s the reason to be excited about ISON, and not call it ordinary.

Comet ISON, the “Comet of the Century” will arrive in Earth’s neighbourhood and promises to light up the dawn sky in November 2013.
