“Be the change that you wish to see in the world”<\/strong>, the man behind this inspiring thought is none other than father of our nation Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi<\/a>. The nation paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi\u00a0on his 144th birth anniversary.<\/p>\n

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as ‘Bapu’, or Gandhiji, was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbander, Gujarat. The United Nations had declared in 2007 that October 2 would be observed as ‘International Day of Non-Violence’.<\/p>\n

The son of a senior government official, Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869 in Porbander, Gujarat, and studied law in London. Mahatma Gandhi became famous by fighting for the civil rights of Muslim and Hindu Indians in South Africa, using a new method of non-violent civil disobedience. In 1915, he returned to India and started organizing poor farmers, urban labourers to protest against excessive land-taxes and discrimination.<\/p>\n

Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for ending untouchability, easing poverty, building religious harmony, increasing economic self-reliance, expanding women’s rights and above all for achieving Swaraj – the independence of India from British rule. He protested against British rule by promoting the philosophy of non-cooperation, including boycotts of British goods and nonviolent civil disobedience. During this time, Gandhi himself underwent four jail terms.<\/p>\n

However, there were many others who strongly disagree the ideas and thoughts of Gandhiji. They demanded that his ideas should be discarded completely. With the same reason conspirators were planning to end Gandhiji. On 30 January 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated, shot at point-blank range by Nathuram Godse.<\/p>\n
