Trivandrum is a culturally rich city with a lot of heritage buildings. Especially the area surrounding the fort reflects its royal past through its spectacular architecture.<\/p>\n
The agraharams at Onnam Puthentheruvu<\/strong> enhanced the quaint charm of the old city of Trivandrum.\u00a0 These agraharams have stories to tell about old Travancore. Instead of declaring as heritage buildings, these agraharams are in the path of encroachment and destruction. The unauthorized construction in the north-east part of Onnam Puthentheruvu is the recent example.<\/p>\n People with vested interest are planning to demolish these old buildings in the name of development. With the nod from the corporation, a shopping complex is planned to construct by destroying the fort wall at the Onnam Puthentheruvu.<\/p>\n The shopping complex is being constructed by demolishing an age old building. The construction work has been currently stopped due to the strong protest from the local people. People residing near the building say that construction is still going on partly by demolishing the compound wall.<\/p>\n Another agraharam heading on the path of destruction is the ‘Ramavarmapuram Gramam<\/strong>‘ which also has unauthorized construction activity. With the support from certain officials at the Town Planning Department, some people are trying to take over prominent parcels of land in the city for the construction of shopping complexes and commercial spaces. Some officials at the State Archaeology Department, says that Corporation is interested in demolishing the fort wall instead of protecting it. They also point out that, these people were able to obtain permission to construct the shopping complex from Corporation very easily.<\/p>\n Unfortunately, the state government is also not interested in protecting these heritage buildings and agrahrams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Trivandrum is a culturally rich city with a lot of heritage buildings.
