German automobile BMW plans to launch the electric car BMW i3 in India in 2014.<\/strong><\/em> BMW i3 is developed as a part of BMW’s ‘Project i’, a program aimed to develop a light-weight eco-friendly electric car that tackles the issues related to mobility and sustainability of the people living in megacities.<\/p>\n

BMW i3, measures less than 4m in length and weighs less than 1200kg. It uses, carbon fibre reinforced polymer or CFRP for the body shell that sits on an all aluminium rolling chassis. On the inside, BMW i3 uses recycled plastic and natural fibres and wood to reduce the negative impact on the environment. The interiors have a plush look and make the car a sustainable model.<\/p>\n

The car is powered by a 125kw motor run by lithium ion batteries has a range of about 150km on a single charge. With a top speed of 150kmph, the i3 can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 7.9 seconds making it a quick car by any standard.<\/p>\n

The i3 allows charging the high-voltage battery from a conventional socket. The BMW i3 has a number of charging functions. For a fast charge, it uses BMW i Wallbox Pure, AC fast charging which can take less than 3 hours. The BMW i3 allows the driver to select the car energy consumption through three different drive modes: Comfort, Eco Pro or Eco Pro+ mode.<\/p>\n

The i8, another sports car from BMW that will use both an internal combustion engine and electric motors to power the car, will be next in line. The i8 too will come to India at a later stage. Both the i3 and the i8 will come to India as CBU (completely built units).<\/p>\n

BMW i3 costs $41,350 in the US which is around Rs26 lakh.<\/strong> Only the rich with a green conscience can afford the car. The arrival of electric cars to the consumer marketplace is a good sign, especially for a country like India who is obsessed with mileage. But infrastructure in India for such electric vehicles has to be developed first.<\/p>\n
