Muttathara sewage treatment plant<\/a> that spread across 100-acre, has a total project cost of Rs.240 crore. Once commissioned, the plant will solve the ongoing sewage problem faced by the city and is expected to prevent the pollution of water bodies.<\/p>\nThe plant which can handle 107-million litres a day<\/strong> (mld) uses ‘Activated sludge and extended aeration technology’ and aims to convince the public that sewage could indeed be treated without polluting or posing problems to the surroundings. Initially, the plant would be treating around 40 mld only, since the sewerage network in the city was yet to be completed.<\/p>\nThe treated water from the sewage plant will be on par with drinking water in terms of quality. When the plant gets fully functional the unscientific method of disposing city\u2019s sewage into Parvathy Puthanar<\/strong> will be stopped. Only purified treated water will be diverted to Parvathy Puthanar. There are also plans to utilize the treated water for landscaping, gardening and other purposes. Meanwhile, the sludge from the plant will be used as manure.<\/p>\nCurrently, only 30%<\/strong> of the city was covered by a sewerage network. The network was present only in 5 \u2018blocks\u2019 out of the total of 18 \u2018sewerage blocks\u2019 that the city was divided into. Work on extending the network was progressing and the network is currently being installed in Attipra, Ulloor, Kadakampally, Nemam, Pappanamcode, Thiruvallam, Attukal, Kaladi and Kalippankulam.<\/p>\nOnce the city\u2019s sewage network is expanded, Muttathara sewage treatment plant will function at full capacity and meet the city\u2019s sewage disposal requirements for the next 25 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
