By fusing the favorite music genre of it’s members and presenting in an unique style, they have carved out a soulful music genre, which the audience are completely in awe of. Let’s get to know the journey of Saptak and what’s coming out of their store soon.

The beginning!

The idea of this band evolved from Sayed in 2009, who was their first Base Guitarist. Then he approached Shafnaz (Vocalist) and Arif (Former Lead Guitarist) to form this band. However, the main task for the three was finding the other members of this band. The band got its life when Arjunesh (Keyboard), Anoop Thomas (Rhythm Guitarist), Arun (Drums) and Hamraz (Backing Vocal) joined the band. Without much qualm, they named their band ‘Saptak’. Even after forming the band, it took almost 2-3 weeks to get into full swing. Saptak started as a cover band and mainly used to play the songs of Atif Aslam and Pakistani Pop band ‘Jal’ initially. ‘Aadat’, ‘Bheegi Yaadein’ were some of the numbers which made them popular. They had to go through rigorous practice sessions to set this band in the correct note.

First performance

Saptak’s debut was at the FISAT fest for the Eastern Orchestra competition. At that time, their drummer Arun urged the need of an original song. So, the idea of creating a song was ignited. However, it was never an easy thing. After trying out different lyrics and music genre, the luck finally came in the form of Shafnaz’s friend Dhanesh. Shafnaz made the other members hear ‘Kelkkunnu Doore Kilikonjal’, a song that was written by Dhanesh and roughly composed by Shafnaz himself during their polytechnic days. Saptak voted in favor and it became their first song. The debut performance was a nervous affair for them. But, that never got reflected in their performance. They played their original cover and the songs of Atif Aslam. The songs being really popular then, the crowd got ecstatic and cheered for them. Being a debut band, this was a perfect start. That got converted to a dream start when they were declared the winners of the competition! That really boosted the morale of this team.

The journey continues..

Saptak @ KICMA, Neyyar Dam.

The band continued actively participating in competitions. However, the major turning point was that they started getting pro shows in the same time. One such show was in LBS College and the audience got completely charmed by their performance. Competing at NIT Ragam and IIT Sarang was really a superb experience for the band. Comparing to the launch they got, the later performances weren’t much satisfying for them. They started running low on confidence. That was the time everyone opted for a reformation in the band. And that’s how Babu Vivek (Lead Guitarist) joined the team. Babu was then guitarist of the metal band Purple Blood too. After his arrival, the music structure and song list of the band got changed. The first performance was at Cult a’ Way’11 opening for ‘Vidwan’ band. Along with the originals, the songs of AR Rahman such as ‘Vellai Pookkal’ and ‘Yeh Jo Desh’ created awesome response from the crowd. The team defines it as the foundation show of the band. It’s after that performance that they decided to take this band forward. The band regained their confidence and every performance after that was greeted well by the audience. Grabbing the top honors at NIT Ragam, Dhwani, Aagneya etc. where the best examples of this. Performing for ‘Kochi Tuskers’ in IPL remains as an unforgettable experience for the team.

Impact of Saptak

After college, many of the band members left for jobs and higher education. Shafnaz, Sayed and Babu were the only ones left in Trivandrum. But they never wanted to give up and started searching for new members. Arun was soon back on drums, who left for a while when Nishanth joined the band. The search for a keyboardist ended when Gautham Ramesh, a former member of the Fly Council band joined them. That’s how the now known Saptak was actually formed. In between, Sayed had to leave and that’s how Ansel Andrew joined this band. The popularity of the band resulted in getting many pro shows like in LBS, Mar Ivanios, Cult a’ way, Azeezia College, Earth Hour concert etc. They got shortlisted into the finals of ‘Decibel’ competition conducted by Radio Mango. Unfortunately, they couldn’t attend the finals due to some prior commitments. They are still getting many pro shows all over Kerala.

‘Khoye Yahaan’

Their latest composition ‘Khoye Yahaan’ got released last month and it was well received by the people. Actually, the song was written by Anoop Thomas in 2011 when the band was preparing for NIT Ragam. The song was first performed there and the crowd response was thrilling. They wholeheartedly thank Yakzan Gary Pereira (Keyboardist of Vidwan band) who helped them in the production of this song.

Crowd Vibe

Saptak has got a great fan following. It’s not a secret that the audience soon turns out into their great fans after a show. Wherever they have performed, the audience has responded well. However, performing in front of SCT College gives them a special joy. They are really in awe of that crowd. SCT crowd has always given them the best cheering. Going back and performing in front of SCTians is one thing they always love to do!

Saptak ‘Signature’

The success of this band can be attributed to the fact that they never tried to stick on to a particular music genre. It may be because the members of the band follow different types of genre. They aim at creating music which pleases every crowd, but with their own signature on it. Even when they are playing film songs, they do it with their own style of composition. The renditions of ‘Dil Se’, ‘Jiya Re’, ‘Dil to Baccha’ etc are some of the best examples of this. Doing the songs of ‘Kadhalan’ movie in reggae genre was another dimension of this.

Support from Other Bands

They surely have the support of the home bands like ‘Avial’, ‘Pathayam’, ‘Kolam’ , ‘Vidwan’ etc. All are very good friends such that they even share venues often. They believe that all these bands are more inclined to indie rock type of music. They take tips and advices from all these bands and even help them in their shows. These bands are even an inspiration for them. Saptak along with all these bands are trying to improve the music culture of Trivandrum.

Future plans

Releasing an album is definitely in the list of immediate plans. The initial works have already started. However, their keyboardist Gautham is currently out of station. They used to jam at his house and even have a recording setup there. Working there gives a lot of freedom and creativeness for them. So, they are waiting for his arrival to start working on their album. They plan to do 3-4 songs and do more shows including these songs. They intend to release a music video too. Meanwhile, famous keyboardist Joe Johnson has joined the band for some upcoming shows.

Influence of EnteCity Thiruvananthapuram

The birth of this band during college days is the biggest influence that this city radiated on their lives. They are completely against the statement that Trivandrum is a place with less scope for music field. They firmly believe that anything is possible if there is a proper teamwork. The musical festivals like ‘Uthrada Chinthu’ are an apt example of that. Through this band, they are trying to set an example of teamwork and trying to improve the music scene in Trivandrum. Above all this, they are always thankful for SCT College and their friends there for the encouragement and love they have always showed to them and the band. SCT had paved the path for some famous bands like Rubber Band, Chaos, Stone Age, Purple Blood etc. On a lighter note, Shafnaz was the one who was mostly influenced so that he even decided to move his hometown from Calicut to Trivandrum.

Related:

EnteCity ties up with SAPTAK the band!

#EnteThiruvananthapuram: Saptak, a 5 piece band started in 2009 by a group of music lovers from SCT Engineering college has emerged into one of the best bands in Trivandrum.
