With live performances and playback singing, she is quite a busy singer these days.

Love for Music

Neha’s love for music started during her schooldays in Muscat. She started learning Carnatic music at the age of 6 under the guidance of Ramesh K Narayan. She was an active participant in all singing competitions during that time. In high school, she started studying Hindustani music from the Pakistani singer Ustad Khalid Anwar Jaan. After completing her schooling, she joined Women’s College in Trivandrum to pursue graduation in music. After settling here, she continued her Carnatic music classes under Perumbavoor G Raveendranath for an year. She also took few vocal training classes from B Sasikumar and western vocal training from Binu. Currently, she is continuing Hindustani music classes under Manohar Keskarji.

Influences!

Like any, she was influenced a lot by Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. If asked to pick one among them, she will go with Ashaji! She is an ardent fan of composers like RD Burman, Illayaraja and AR Rahman. However, she believes the turning point of her career happened after meeting ‘Avial’ band. They introduced her into a wider genre of music. After that her influences gradually got changed. She names the Icelandic singer-songwriter Bjork as her major influence now. The list also includes Kaki King, Mutemath rock band etc. She is just back in city after watching Mutemath live at Delhi NH7 weekender. Through them, she got a realisation that music is not just about films, it’s a vast field yet to be explored.

Into limelight

She made a demo CD and send that to many of the music directors. That’s how Rahul Raj invited her to sing for Ritu. Her debut song was ‘Chanchalam’, a duet song with Job Kurian. However, the song didn’t get much popular. She didn’t have much contact in the industry. That led to a gap after Chanchalam, but she never got dejected. That’s when she was invited to the ‘Outcast Vocals’ programme of Rosebowl channel. That really was her turning point. After seeing the programme, Aashiq Abu roped her in to sing for Salt N’ Pepper. The song ‘Premikkumbol’ was a runaway hit.

‘Thazhvaaram’

She had sent a copy of the demo cd to Shaan Rahman too. Shaan had promised to work sometime as he was busy with some other projects then. She still wonders how Shaan remembered her and chose to sing this song. She recorded the track version at her home and send to Shaan. However, they weren’t confident about making the duet song. Her voice texture was so different from that of Hesham’s who sang the male version of the song. They doubted that her voice may not match for Shobhana. First it was planned that her version will be included in the cd only. Later, Shaan made her sing ‘Nithya Sahaya Nadhe’, a song which appears in the climax part of the movie. After recording this, he got confident to go ahead with the duet version of Thazhvaaram. Incidentally, the song became very popular and Neha’s singing was widely appreciated. The song still tops many of the charts.

Stint with Bands

Neha is associated with two of the popular bands in Trivandrum, Avial and Vidwan. She goes as a guest vocalist with Avial for their live shows, singing their popular numbers such as ‘Karukara’, ‘Nagumo’ etc. With VIdwan, it’s a special feeling for her. Whether it is song writing, composing or arranging, she is actively involved in all of these. The band is like a family to all its members. Vidwan has completed a session in Music Mojo Season 2 of Kappa TV which will be aired soon. She’s totally excited about Vidwan’s tour of Australia. They will be performing at the prestigious Woodford Folk Festival which begins on 24th December. Vidwan is coming under World Folk genre. She believes that the festival will really be a great exposure to the band and her.

Scene ‘Music Direction’

Neha even tried her hand in Music Direction when she was having a lot of free time. She was the brain behind the background score of Vineeth Menon’s short film ‘Scene Contra: Mattoru Cliche’. When she was invited to do the background score of this short film, she actually thought that would be a good experience doing sound programming and all. Since the short film was a romantic comedy one, she had the opportunity to experiment with music. She wanted to know how it was to do background score for a movie.

‘Reality shows’

Reality shows were booming high when she came down to settle in Trivandrum. Even though her dad encouraged participating in such shows, she was never ever interested. She is of the opinion that reality shows in Kerala are a bit dramatized. More than singing, the shows give more emphasis on performing in colourful sets, dancing and all. She says that if you have flair for acting too, then reality shows are the best stage for it. However, she believes that reality shows are slowly nearing extinction these days. Her favourite artist Bjork is an actress too. She donned the roles of actor, lyricist, music director and singer in the movie ‘Dancer in the Dark’. She really admires multitalented people. Anyways, she isn’t reading for acting yet!

Celebrity Singers

Actors becoming singers is never an issue, says Neha. The playback singers too know that the songs won’t last in the people’s mind for a long time. She finds such songs just as a promotional tool for the movie. However, her opinion is that the playback singers shouldn’t depend on the film songs alone. Nowadays there is a lot of chances for a parallel music stream, which she says is effective. The greatest example of this is Avial band; they took a great risk 10 years back, but emerged very much successful. Music outside films is having great scope now. She wants everyone to explore that route too, and then only an identity is created.

Cover Versions

It was Rosebowl’s creative director Sumesh Lal who gave Neha a chance to jam with the maestro keyboardist Stephen Devassy in the programme ‘Piano session with Stephen’. It was really a revelation for her. She understood that our popular film songs can be recreated in our own way. After that ‘Outcast Vocals’ happened. There she got the chance to work with Avial’s lead guitarist Rex Vijayan. The sessions in Music Mojo got too popular too. Her cover versions have produced terrific response from the people, especially youngsters. Many have said to her that they came to know the existence of such songs through her versions. The cover versions of ‘Etho Varmukilin’ and ‘Eeran Megham’ is the most popular one’s among them.

Close to Heart

Every song she has sung is special to her. But Thazhvaaram from Thira remains so close to her heart. The main reason being the song gave the ample chance to explore her voice tone. The tone and texture of that song suits the best for her voice. The song ‘Shalabhamayi’ from Shyamaprasad’s movie English is also in her list of most favourites. Over a year, she’s consistently working on her voice modulation.

Family

Family is her greatest strength. Neha’s dad V Sasikumar, who always wanted her to become a classical singer, is her biggest inspiration. It’s because of him she chose to do graduation in music. Now she is really thankful to him for leading in the perfect path. Her parents are really encouraging. She says that her sister is the best critic and supporter.

If not a singer?

She wanted to be a journalist during schooldays. But she always wanted to get creative. She disliked doing works which are mechanical. But if asked what she would have become if not a singer, the answer will be “I don’t know”! She loves to do creative writing, mostly fiction. She is a person who loves to pen down spontaneous thoughts. She even wrote music review about Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and his son’s concert for The Hindu newspaper. ‘Kaana Dooram’ from ‘Aami’ segment of 5 Sundarikal was penned by her. She owns a blog too. You can meet writer Neha at,
nehanair. blogspot.in

Future is perfect

She is going to do the background score for a documentary called ‘Samaram’ directed by Anju Mohandas and Chidambaram. She’s really serious about Vidwan. She has decided to take a break from doing cover versions. The plans are on for doing some own compositions. People love more to hear the melodious side of her voice, but she wants to keep experimenting so as to retain her versatility.

‘Trivandrum: My beloved City’

Neha finds Trivandrum as the best place to live in. she finds this place very calm and peaceful. Says it’s a special feel getting back here after a tour or so. The musicians’ gang mainly hangs out at the beaches here and she believes that it helps their creative side too. Even though she finds the life here a little lazy, the calmness here provides the apt atmosphere to work on.

From her popular cover versions like ‘Etho Varmukilin’ to ‘Thazhvaaram’ from the movie Thira, Neha Nair continues to wow the music lovers.
