The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) will station a Dornier fixed wing aircraft and a Chetak helicopter at Trivandrum, if proposal for establishing a sub-headquarters at the domestic terminal of the Trivandrum Airport gets approval. The proposal is currently awaiting approval from Defence Ministry. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has approved the ICG proposal for taking the airport land on a lease.<\/p>\n
Initially, Dornier, a Chetak helicopter and an Advanced-light Helicopter will be stationed and over a period of time, more aircraft will be added. At present, the ICG station at Vizhinjam has two Interceptor Craft which are used in emergencies and to monitor the coastline. Currently, only ICG regional HQ in Kochi has Dorniers and Chetaks, which are used in emergencies further south or north of the coast. \u00a0And having aircraft on hand will increase the efficiency of ICG at South.<\/p>\n
Fishermen along the Trivandrum-Kollam coastal line are the beneficiaries of the new proposal. \u00a0Life threats and missing of fishermen in the deep sea could be minimised considerably. Currently, rescue boats owned by Fisheries, Coastal police, and Coast guard\u2019s Charlie boats are used in rescue missions. But, these boats can\u2019t be used in rough weather. In such an event, aircrafts from Kochi are called for rescue. However, it causes considerable delay. All these problems can be solved once; the new headquarters and aircrafts are operational.<\/p>\n
Moreover, once the Vizhinjam international seaport becomes a reality, military presence in the area will be further increased. Both the Indian Navy and the ICG will be provided berths at the port. When the port becomes operational, there will be an increase in international shipping, fishing activities and the possibility of sea-based criminal activities. This prompted the Coast Guard to strengthen their presence here.<\/p>\n
With the new sub-headquarters, ICG aims to prevent terrorists activities, respond to distress signals fast and facilitate quick rescue in the event of an emergency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
