Now it seems like the trucks are getting a new lease of life.<\/p>\n<p>The trucks will be modified and will be fitted with sludge tanks and suction machines. The present dumper placed on these trucks would be replaced by a sludge tank with a capacity of 4,000 litres. A 40 metre hose has also to be attached.<\/p>\n<p>Trivandrum City Corporation bought these hi-tech trucks in 2011 at a cost of 20 lakh each for the purpose of garbage collection and transportation to the waste treatment factory at Vilappilsala. \u00a0When the trucks were purchased, the protest against the Vilappilsala waste treatment plant was beginning to gain momentum.\u00a0 Later, the residents of Vilappilsala started preventing the garbage trucks from entering the panchayat.\u00a0 By the end of 2011, the garbage treatment plant was forced to be closed down and this had made the trucks useless.<\/p>\n<p>With no sign of reopening the Vilappilsala plant, civic body has decided to turn the trucks for managing the septage waste. Initially, it was nine trucks. Later they shifted all the trucks except these three. These trucks have been exposed to the elements of nature for the past two years<\/p>\n<p>When asked why the trucks took 2 years to be converted for another purpose, health standing committee chairperson S Pushpalatha said that the trucks bought for a particular purpose could be converted for another only with the approval of the committee.
