Whether you are designing hyper-modern furniture or reproducing human tissues, start-ups all over the world are using 3D printing as a foundation for building innovative businesses. Now a Trivandrum based technology startup called Biotz has entered into the foray of 3d Printing.<\/p>\n

The company which specializes in the avenues of robotics and industrial automation has come up with a product called \u2018Makifyr\u2019 \u2013a fully-functional 3D printer with which one can \u2018create\u2019 a three dimensional object from a digital model at an affordable cost. The product, which has been developed after more year of R&D, is fully functional and ready for mass production.<\/p>\n

Makifyr is essentially a 3D printer” says Paul Anand, CEO of Biotz “Specifications of objects created using the Makifyr are limited only by the creativity of the designer and the specifications of the design,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Apart from Paul, Team Biotz consists of Akhil S. Nair (technology architect) and Vigil M. Unnithan (research engineer), all three of whom passionate on innovative technologies. The trio teamed up after college to set up their venture and set off to create their first project \u2013 Makifyr.<\/p>\n

How does it work?<\/h3>\n

The working of Makifyr is similar to that of a normal printer; the difference is that while the conventional printer prints on a two dimensional interface or paper, the Makifyr actually \u2018creates\u2019 a physical object in 3 dimensions. The device uses custom software to process the 3D design created using Computer Aided Design software, which in turn sends instructions to the printer. The device uses a heated nozzle that follows the instructions received from the computer to spew a certain thermoplastic in layers. This plastic solidifies to form the resultant object which is precise and exactly matches the design\u2019s dimensions.<\/p>\n

Makifyr finds a wide range of application across various industries such as healthcare for making prosthetics, automobile industry for making prototypes, designing, movies & television and most importantly researchers.<\/p>\n

The production cost of a single Makifyr is around Rs1 Lakh. This would go down even further when the device is mass produced. Once commercially available, Makifyr will be the one of the world\u2019s cheapest commercially available 3D printers. \u201cOur printer is significantly cheaper than almost every other 3D printer in the market. By 2015, Every Indian home should have a 3D printer”, says Paul Anand, CEO.<\/p>\n

Biotz company is also gearing up to launch an initiative called \u2018YuMake<\/strong>\u2019 that is closely related to the idea behind the \u2018Makifyr<\/strong>\u2019 The initiative tries to spread technologies related to robotics and embedded systems by making them available in the public domain, by including well-curated documentation, datasheets and exhaustive collections of DIY projects. YuMake will also have a dedicated e-commerce store to buy components and bundled kits to help develop prototypes.<\/p>\n

3D printers are relatively new, but so were Blurays at one point. Their rate of adoption has been less, primarily due to prohibitive costs. Once 3D printing becomes cheaper it will be a boon to a host of industries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
