With the new system, the police hope to reduce the number of road accidents, majority of them caused due to speeding and reckless driving.<\/p>\n<p>Around 100 cameras will be installed on 50 spots to find those who violate speed limits. A Hi-tech Traffic Enforcement Control Room called Central Monitoring Station (CMS) set up in the Police Training College at Thycaud will monitor these 50 stretches. The 24-hour Monitoring Station has been linked to the traffic surveillance system to spot speedsters in real time. The traffic surveillance system also make use of Field surveillance units which is an array of active magnetic sensors buried below the road, and Doppler radars have been linked to overhead surveillance cameras in the selected spots.<\/p>\n<p>When a vehicle exceeds the prescribed speed limit, the system detects that vehicle. Meanwhile, the cameras will capture the rear registration number plate of the vehicle and its video and still images from different angles, to be presented in court as evidence. Police can even download the images to their laptops or mobile phones.<\/p>\n<p>The automatic number plate recognition system will retrieve the registration particulars of the vehicle, including its ownership details from the data of the Motor Vehicles Department. The system runs on optical character recognition software and can enhance even blurred images of number plates.<\/p>\n<p>Hi-tech traffic surveillance system is implemented at a cost of Rs.40 crore.
