The special purpose camera systems will ensure the safety of the travelling public, especially women, in places that are badly lit.<\/p>\n<p>The project will be implemented by Keltron and is jointly funded by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP).<\/p>\n<p>The high resolution infrared cameras come with motion sensors and enhanced night vision capabilities. The new system will be connected to the existing surveillance network and control rooms will be setup to monitor these cameras.<\/p>\n<p>In the initial phase, the new camera system will cover East Fort, Attakulangara, Manacaud, Thampanoor, Ayurveda College, Statue, LMS, PMG, Pattom, Kesavadasapuram, Ulloor and Medical College localities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The new camera system would help instil a sense of security among commuters and daunt petty criminals,&#8221; said a senior police official to The Hindu.<\/p>\n<p>According to the survey conducted by Sakhi, an organization for women, about 98% of women commuters took part in the survey had identified sexual harassment in public transport buses, bus stops, and roadsides as the main safety problem. The survey also reveals that, verbal abuse was the most common form of sexual harassment with 80% followed by physical harassment with 60% and 51% feared potential chain-snatchers. Other sexual harassment includes stalking (26%) and exhibitionism 21%.<\/p>\n<p>With the new security measure, city police hopes to bring down the atrocities against women in public places.
