In a rain reduced match, New Zealand scored 271/7 in 42 overs. Jesse Ryder gave them an explosive start before getting out at 20 to Mohammed Shami. Martin Guptill (44), Kane Williamson (77), and Ross Taylor (57) paved the perfect platform for the hosts before Anderson (44 of 17 balls) mercilessly assaulted the Indian bowling. Mohammed Shami took three wickets for India. As per D/L method, India was given a target of 297 in 42 overs.

The openers didn’t gave the best of starts and both were dismissed inside 10 overs with score hardly reaching the forties. As usual, it was left to Kohli and middle order to tackle the rising run rate. The players responded well and it was again Kohli who lead the fight with a resilient 78 of just 65 balls. Rahane (36), Dhoni (56) and Raina (35) tried their best to reach the target but the Kiwi bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals to stop Indians from winning. Dhoni was dismissed when India needed 40 of 17, which sealed off team’s winning hopes. Rain again caused delay during the match and India’s target was reduced to 293 in 41.3 overs. However, a great effort from the Kiwis ensured that India never reached the target. Tim Southee picked up 4 wickets and was well supported by Anderson who took 3.

It is the second time in the history of ODI cricket that the team batting second lost even after surpassing the score of team which batted first; thanks to D/L method!
