Earlier, passengers unsure about the status of their ticket had to send out an SMS to IRCTC with the PNR Number. The system will then check the latest status and reply back. Passengers either have to dial the IVR number 139 or use the IRCTC site to know the waitlisted ticket status. Others get to know the status of their tickets only after reaching stations.<\/p>\n<p>When the new SMS-based service becomes operational, passengers will get the updated status of their waitlisted tickets automatically. Only those passengers whose tickets get confirmed will get the SMS. The confirmation SMS will be sent on the same mobile number that was used by the passenger while booking the ticket.<\/p>\n<p>CRIS, an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Railways that develops and manages the IT solutions of the Indian Railways is making the software for the SMS-based service.
